One Community, Many Water Needs
As is the case worldwide, people here in Nevada County use and need water for their work, play, and everyday life. Quick and easy access to water is one of the modern world's biggest perks. While we are one community, we all have different water needs. Sometimes it's for play; however, most of the time, it's necessary for daily living.
Our new One Community, Many Water Needs campaign highlights how real people use water to live their lives to the fullest. And we invite you to share on Facebook and Instagram the ways water is most important to you. You may discover new uses for water you may have never thought of before!
Water for Play
Ask any kid, and they'll tell you one of the key ingredients to fun is water. They don't care if it's cold outside; it's never too cold to play in the water! They're ready to jump in and swim.
Kids and adults alike can agree that boating on one of the many nearby lakes is a great way to play and have fun in the summer. And swimming is a preferred choice of exercise for many older people.
Water also provides much-needed relaxation for overworked adults. There's nothing like a quiet evening with just the sound of nature and a water fountain trickling nearby. And that's not all.
Water for Everyday Life
We need water to live. NID provides safe drinking water for daily consumption to households in Nevada and Placer counties.
Just think about your day and all the ways you use water. You drink it, and you take a shower in it. It's essential for teeth brushing and hand washing to keep us all healthy.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency:
- Only 1% of the water on the planet is safe for human use
- The average American family uses more than 300 gallons a day at home
- 24% of our water usage is from the toilet
Water for Food
Gardening and Cooking
It takes a lot of work and water to produce enough food for everyone. And it’s necessary for our survival. Whether you're a home gardener or run a farm or ranch, everything needs water to grow and live. From produce to livestock, water is necessary to put food on the table and even to cook it.
NID brings a steady supply of irrigation water to local farmers who feed our families and make up one of the largest sectors in our economy. Nutritious and delicious, local produce and other agricultural products are grown from the finest and freshest water delivered directly from the Sierra Nevada mountain snowpack.
Plan for Water
We are genuinely interested in knowing how you use water, whether it's for fun or work. It's our job to ensure there's enough water to go around for years. Right now, we're working on our Plan for Water. We're looking at how our community uses water, how our community is growing, and how our needs might evolve to ensure there is plenty of water to share for the next 50 years.
