Cross Connection Control Program
Nevada Irrigation District’s (NID) Cross-Connection Control Program was created in accordance with federal and state regulations to protect the public drinking water supply from contamination through sources existing downstream of NID’s drinking water meter. The State Water Resources Control Board has implemented the Cross-Connection Control Policy Handbook which outlines the regulations water suppliers must follow to stay in compliance for cross-connection and backflow standards.
Backflow and Cross-Connection FAQ’s
What is backflow?
Backflow means the reverse flow of water or any other hazordous fluid from the customer’s system into NID’s water distribution system.
What is a Cross Connection?
Cross connection is any connection between NID’s water distribution system and an auxiliary water supply, a pipe or piping system, plumbing fixture, appliance, container, receptacle, vessel or other devices that may allow for contaminated water, fluids, or other substance, other than the water supplied by NID, to enter any part of the water distribution system.
What is backflow prevention assembly (BPA)?
Backflow prevention assemblies (BPA) are devices that are installed at water service connections and prevent non-potable substances from flowing back into the drinking water supply.
I have a well on my property. Do I need a backflow preventor?
Yes, any auxiliary water supply located on a property that is being delivered piped treated water requires a backflow preventor.
NID Backflow Prevention Testing and Maintenance Service
A Backflow Prevention Assembly, or BPA, is a check valve that is designed to allow water to flow in one direction. Once a BPA has been installed and approved, NID staff conducts all state-required initial and annual testing. NID also maintains and replaces all readily serviceable internal components to ensure each BPA meets compliance standards. Being that NID provides these services, customers do not have to hire their own certified tester to test and maintain the BPA. These services are provided on a fee based system depending on size and type of BPA and are included in your monthly water bill. More information related to NID’s Cross Connection program can be found in section 9 of the Rules and Regulations.
