(Grass Valley, CA March 4, 2021) – The Nevada Irrigation District (NID) today announced that it has released its draft 2020 Agricultural Water Management Plan (AWMP) and the public can review it on the NID website at nidwater.com.

A Board Workshop to review the AWMP will be held during its March 10th Board of Directors meeting at approximately 9:00 a.m. In addition, a Public Hearing is scheduled on the AWMP at the March 24th Board of Directors meeting. Anyone wishing to submit comments on the AWMP is encouraged to send them in writing by email to info@nidwater.com by end of day March 16, 2021. Comments received by this date will be incorporated and/or attached as an appendix to the 2020 AWMP prior to submission. While comments received after 3/16 will be considered, they will not be incorportaed into the final AWMP submitted to the state.

The California Water Code requires agricultural water providers, such as NID, to prepare an Agricultural Water Management Plan every five years. The report includes information about NID’s roughly 5,600 agricultural customers such as past water usage, conservation efforts, and other management elements. The AWMP must be adopted by the NID Board of Directors by April 1, 2021 and is due to the State Department of Water Resources within 30 days of adoption.

About ninety percent of all the water delivered by NID is for agricultural use giving life to approximately 32,000 acres of irrigated land in Nevada and Placer Counties. Most agricultural water customers purchase water seasonally, from mid-April through mid-October. NID’s raw water is conveyed to customers through a unique network of over 500 miles of canal and is used to grow multiple crops including wine grapes, nursery stock, apples, rice, plums, citrus, grass, alfalfa hay, as well as to irrigate pasture.

Due to COVID-19, NID is currently holding its meetings via Zoom. Full details and instructions for how to access these meetings will be provided on the meeting agenda posted on nidwater.com 72 hours before each meeting.  More information about the AWMP can be found on NID’s website at NIDwater.com
