NID wishes you an enjoyable Memorial Day holiday – please be aware of wildfire risk and low water levels
(Grass Valley May 28, 2021) The Nevada Irrigation District (NID) would like to wish everyone a safe and happy Memorial Day. The holiday weekend typically kicks off the camping and outdoor recreation season, and the District’s High Sierra and foothill campgrounds are open and ready to welcome visitors.
However, be aware of drought conditions and an ever-present risk of wildfire. Please use caution around all waterways and facilities. Currently, there are no boating restrictions, but boaters are urged to be cautious due to low water levels and debris that might be sticking out of the water.
NID strives to provide outstanding outdoor recreational opportunities at the District’s Sierra reservoirs. Camping, fishing, swimming, sunning, boating, water skiing, sailing, kayaking and other activities are popular at both Rollins and Scotts Flat reservoirs, at a 2,100-foot elevation and 3,100-foot elevation, respectively.
In the mountains, NID maintains and operates campgrounds and recreational facilities in the Jackson Meadows – Bowman Lake areas. Jackson Meadows features several campgrounds, picnic day-use sites and boat ramps. Other campgrounds are located at Bowman, Canyon Creek, Sawmill and Faucherie Lakes in the Bowman corridor. East Meadows and Pass Creek campgrounds will open on May 27; reservations are full and first-come sites are limited.
“Our camping season is beginning, and we want to welcome everyone to our recreation facilities and campgrounds,” said Monica Reyes, NID Recreation Manager. “However, please remember we are in a drought, and the forests are dry and reservoirs are at lower levels. In order to protect our forests and community, we do have fire controls, and we appreciate adherence to them.”
Reyes added, “We would like everyone to enjoy themselves, be respectful to their neighbors and remember ‘quiet time’ is from 10pm to 8am.”
