Pack it in; pack it out … and other reminders for recreating in mountain watersheds
August 24, 2020
Trash has become an issue at Jackson Meadows and other mountain division rec facilities.
It’s time to take full advantage of the summer weather and venture up into the Sierra to hike, fish and camp at Nevada Irrigation District’s (NID) mountain reservoirs. These lakes are remote, beautiful and refreshingly wet on a hot summer day.
NID welcomes visitors to its campgrounds and recreational facilities in the Jackson Meadows – Bowman Lake area. We do ask everyone to be mindful of their surroundings and show respect to others. We are in danger of loving these special destinations to death.
This summer the number of visitors and campers has skyrocketed. The crowds bring more challenges. There are not only a lot more people around; unfortunately, the amount of trash being left behind is causing a real problem.
Please remember to pack it in; pack it out – take your trash with you.
Other reminders:
Camp in designated areas. Don’t pitch your tent on the side of the road or other makeshift sites.
The fire danger is extremely high. Check fire regulations for each facility – click here to learn more from the Tahoe National Forest. In general, never build a fire outside of a campfire ring.
It’s all of our responsibility to make sure these beautiful destinations remain clean and safe for us to venture back to on future adventures.
NID operates campgrounds and recreational facilities in the Jackson Meadows-Bowman Lake area about 30 miles from Nevada City. These include Jackson Meadows, Bowman, Canyon Creek, Sawmill and Faucherie reservoirs.
