Winter camping re-opens on March 1

NID’s foothill campgrounds will re-open for winter camping starting on March 1.

The campgrounds at Scotts Flat Reservoir, as well as at Long Ravine and Orchard Springs at Rollins Reservoir will be open on a first come first served basis.

The regional coronavirus stay-at-home order was lifted on Jan. 12, but NID Recreation personnel decided to remain closed for a little longer just in case another shutdown occurred, according to Recreation Manager Monica Reyes. “Since this has not happened, we feel confident about reopening at this time.”

While no reservations are being taken for winter camping, online reservations are now available for foothill camping later in the year.

Please note COVID-19 guidelines are in place for campers and day-use visitors. Read more about the guidelines here.

Scotts Flat is situated at the 3,100-foot elevation nine miles east of Nevada City via Highway 20 and Scotts Flat Road. It offers 169 campsites at two large campgrounds, plus a group camp.

Rollins, located at the 2,100-foot elevation off Highway 174 between Grass Valley and Colfax, has four independently operated campgrounds. Long Ravine, Greenhorn, Orchard Springs and Peninsula offer a combined 250 campsites.

Of note: in the high country, Faucherie, Aspen and Silvertip Group Campsites remain closed. NID is taking reservations with no payment for the 2021 summer camping season in case the State and County restrictions are lifted prior to stay. Also, NID group sites in the foothill campgrounds are under the same rules as the upper division. The District is taking the reservations with no payment, in case the group site are able to open later this year.
